KUALA LUMPUR HOLIDAYS and FAR EAST TOURS
There are still plenty of colonial buildings in its centre along with a
buzzing Chinatown with street vendors and night markets.
A sight not to miss are the world's tallest buildings, the twin Petronas
towers.
Your trip to Kuala Lumpur can be combined with a stay in the Malaysian beach resorts of Penang or Langkawi. Alternatively, extend your stay in the Far East and include a visit to Thailand, Hong Kong or Singapore.

Kuala Lumpur
Cosmopolitan KL will not fail to astonish you. But before you plunge into its
warren of streets and markets, get your bearings from the public observation
platform of the KL Tower on Bukit Nanas (Pineapple
Hill), right in the city centre.
This concrete telecommunications tower has
incorporated Islamic features into its design and stands 421 m (1,381 ft) tall.
Even higher, the twin Petronas Towers in the Ampang
district took the title of the world's tallest buildings in 1996. Each 452-m
(1,483-ft) tower rests on a raft supported by 104 piles.
Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Perdana), a park southwest of the city centre, is the gathering place of the people of KL. Hire a boat on the lake or wander the grounds with its lawns, flowering shrubs and trees. The National Monument (Tugu Negara), an imposing memorial to the struggle against the communist partisans in the 1940s and 50s, dominates the park. To one side lies the modern 18-storey Parliament House, noted for its clean, modern lines, and to the other the National Museum (Muzium Negara) with its high, sloping roofs and mosaic murals. The museum presents the whole panorama of Malaysian life, from remote jungle kampongs (villages) to the splendour of the sultans' courts. A highlight of any visit, the natural history section displays the extraordinary plant and animal life of the jungles.
The pride of Malaysia is the National Mosque (Masjid Negara), completed in 1965. It's the biggest mosque in South-East Asia. Visitors are welcome to view the spacious interior of marble, the reflecting pools and galleries, provided they respect Islamic custom by taking off their shoes.
The onion domes, minarets and arabesque arches of the pink and white Jame Mosque (Masjid Jame) are best seen silhouetted against the twilit sky. Built in 1909 in traditional Moghul style, the mosque stands at the confluence of the Kelang and Gombak rivers—a serene oasis in the bustling city.
Across the river is the green heart of KL, Merdeka Square (Independence Square). In the days of the British, this was the Padang, where cricket was played before enthusiasts watching from the mock-Tudor Selangor Club; today the National Day parades take place on the green. On the east side of the square you can admire the magnificent Sultan Abdul Samad Building, a stately architectural mix of Victorian and Moorish elements.
The neighbourhood is dominated by the 34-storey Dayabumi skyscraper, a striking synthesis of traditional Islamic and modern styles. Further south in Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin is another kind of architectural fantasy, half sultan's palace, half mosque—KL's amazing railway station, since 1911 a tourist attraction in itself.
A bridge over the river links the Dayabumi complex with the Central Market, housed in an attractive Art-Deco building. Where formerly fish, meat and fruit and vegetables changed hands, the interior has now been remodeled into a mall of handicraft shops and restaurants.
At night head for Petaling Street—the heart of Chinatown, a blaze of neon, light bulbs and lanterns.
Have your fortune told, buy a python—or a bowl of noodle soup. At the south end
of the street is colourful Chan See Shu Yuen Temple, the oldest Chinese shrine in Malaysia, built in 1906 by early tin
prospectors. The temple complex is the religious and social centre of the
Chinese quarter. The comparable gathering point for Hindus is on the western
edge of Chinatown: the richly decorated Sri Mahariamman Temple dating from the end of the 19th century.
If you're in KL on
a Saturday night, don't miss the exclusively Malay Sunday Market, so named because for the Malays a day always starts on the
evening before. Equally confusing is the delightful array of stalls with
handicrafts, spices, fruits, flowers, fabrics and snacks.
Excursions
A trip to Templer Park, 22 km (14 miles) north of KL, takes you from skyscraper to jungle and back in an afternoon. The last tiger was shot here some time ago, but you may find that hard to believe as you wander along jungle paths under a canopy of green. Swim in a lagoon, stand under a waterfall, chat to monkeys or catch a glimpse of a flying lizard.
Tigers are safely behind bars at the National Zoo, 13 km (7 miles) from the city centre. Other exotic and fast-disappearing creatures include tapirs, gibbons, gorgeously plumed birds and the old man of the jungle himself, the orang-utan.
The "real" Malaysia of stilt houses in forest clearings
lies but 18 km (11 miles) away from KL in Mimaland—Malaysia in miniature. This leisure park built
around a lake boasts jungle trails and an orchid plantation.
No visitor
to KL should miss the extraordinary Batu Caves, 12
km (7 miles) north of the city. Dozens of caverns, some as large as a cathedral,
wind deep into a giant outcrop of limestone. Quite a few remain unexplored. Tens
of thousands of Hindus make an annual pilgrimage to the caves on
Thaipusam, the Hindu day of atonement. The main ceremonies are held in
Cathedral Cave, reached by no less than 272 steps, while Hindu religion and
mythology are illustrated and explained in Museum Cave. On the way to the caves,
you're likely to visit the Selangor Pewter Factory and the Batik Factory.
