China Holidays - Tours of China - Escorted Tours

A visit to China is the trip of a lifetime. Third after Russia and Canada in size, it is second to none in population (more than a thousand million) and extraordinary variety, more like a continent than a country. The north borders Siberia, while the south is well into the tropics.

The fertile flood plains of China's huge rivers are as intensively farmed, its deserts as wild and empty as anywhere on earth. No wonder its people used to think there was nothing of any consequence outside their own borders.

For 4,000 years, dynasty succeeded dynasty. Then in 1912 the empire was overthrown and replaced by a republic led by Sun Yat-sen. But civil war kept China in turmoil, which continued with Japanese occupation of most of northern China. After World War II, Mao Zedong's communist forces defeated the Nationalists led by Chiang Kai-Shek; the People's republic of China was proclaimed in 1949.

The world's oldest living culture is also one of its fastest growing economies - a nation in a state of flux. Today the wonders are luxury hotels, portable telephones and fast food restuarants. Tomorrow, who can predict?

China and Shanghai

China is a vast country of outstanding natural beauty.

Shanghai, is located on the Yangzi River in the south east of China.

Building on it's success in Japan, Formula One is looking to establish itself in China and the new Shanghai circuit will also host other major sporting events.

Excellent hotels, exceptional value for money and guaranteed sunshine - what more could you ask for?

Shanghai is an easy city to get around, by using the excellent subway system. Otherwise it can be a exhasting experience

No need to worry about how to get to the this race, as it is expected that public transport will be specially arranged to take visitors to the new track.

As the Grand Prix circuit is located close to the city, your hotel will never be more than a few miles away.

The Shanghai Race is well placed to offer you the opportunity to experience the sights of Shanghai and other great destinations within China.

You can also take advantage of a two-centre race tour by including a visit to the Japanese Grand Prix on the way home.

Shanghai Iinternational Airport (opened in 1999, near Pudong, about an hour's drive from the city centre) handles flights from all over the world, day and night.

Buses and taxis connect the new airport to the city centre and Hongqiao airport. (Hongqiao airport is 11miles from the Bund and reachable via bus, shuttle or taxi. It has some international and most domestic flights).
Departure tax is US$11 (international).

Shanghai has a few long-distance bus stations, the most useful is probably Hengfeng Lu.
It's a 13-hour trip to Beijing from this station.

Shanghai is at the junction of the Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Hangzhou train lines.

Since these branch off in various directions, many parts of the country can be reached by direct train from Shanghai.
Most trains arrive and depart from Shanghai station.

Boats are the one of the fastest ways of leaving Shanghai and are often the cheapest.
Ferries travel up the Yangzi River and there are many boats that stop along the coast.
There are also regular ships and ferries to Korea and Japan.

While there are some fascinating places to stroll through in Shanghai, new road developments, building sites, jam-packed walkways and shocking traffic conditions make walking in most areas an exhausting experience.

Local buses are hard work too.

The subway system, on the other hand, is a dream - with a north-south sprint through central Shanghai.
A new line has opened, running from Zhongshan Park along Nanjing Lu and across to Pudong.
Taxis are reasonably cheap and easy to flag down.
A number of hotels also offer free shuttle buses to and from the Bund area.

Although it's possible to hire a car in Shanghai, it's really not worth the hassle unless you're familiar with the nightmare of Shanghai's one-way system and the appalling conditions on the roads.

Location:
The City of Shanghai lies on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean and at the central section of the north-south coastline of China.

Climate:
Shanghai belongs to the North Asia hot monsoon climate, with four distinctive seasons. The city has sufficient sunshine and rainfall.

Population:
The permanent residents of Shanghai come from China's 44 ethnic groups. The han nationality accounts for 99.53% of the total.
The most of them are from Hui, Man, and Mongolian nationalities, zhuang.
